Crafting and creating with potato stamps
This is very basic but versatile craft idea, suitable for toddlers and preschoolers.
Preparation:
1 small potato
piece of paper (I used A3 format and I have Nina’s table lined with paper too, just in case)
finger paint or gouache (I used yellow and red gouache as I could not remember where I put Nina’s finger paint. Maybe avoid using acrylic paint as it is very hard to remove it form clothes, furniture, floors or any other surface)
tray, plate or container lined with foil
pencils for finishing up your poster
Process:
I washed potato and cut it in halves.
Squeezed some paint on to my tray. Sprayed it with water, so it is just a bit more fluid, than straight from the tube.
Then I showed Nina how to dip potato halves into paint and water mixture and stamp them on to paper. When I tried to encourage Nina to make prints herself, I noticed that she did not want to touch raw potato, so I just stick it on to a pencil. But using a folk, for example will be a better idea, if you prepare it in advance. So after a while we produce a whole field of orange ‘pumpkins’ – this is what I saw in our pint shapes. As Nina got distracted by something obviously more exciting I let our poster dry and then quickly added some details, so it would look like a finished artwork which could be proudly presented to Nina’s granny.

Happy crafting!
